What deacons do (according to the Bible)

Here is a general list, taken from Scripture, for the responsibilities of church deacons:

1.    To serve the Lord first of all through the delegated work from the elders. He serves the Lord by supporting the elders (2 Cor. 6:4; Acts 19;22; 2 Tim. 4:11). He does not shepherd or rule.

2.    To faithfully serve his wife and family (1 Timothy 3; Titus 1).

3.    To serve the people of God. This is seen in the way deacons served in Scripture:

a.    Preparing meals and the house for company (Lk. 10:40)

b.    Serving food (Acts 6:1)

c.     Ministering the Word of God in various ways (Acts 6:4; 20:24; 21:19; Rom. 11:13; 2 Cor. 8:4; 9:1,12f).

d.    By distribution of finances for the relief of the needy (Acts 11:29; 12:25; 2 Cor. 8:4; 9:1, 12f).

e.    By exercising spiritual gifts of service in a variety of ways (Rom. 12:7; 1 Cor. 12:5).

f.      By serving as

(1)  Ministers of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18)

(2)  Workers in the ministry of the Body of Christ (Eph. 4:12).

4.    To be faithful and dependable (1 Cor. 4:2; Eph. 6:21; Col. 1:7; 4:7).

5.    To promote the good of Christ’s Church (1 Tim. 4:6).

6.    To be devoted in serving believers (1 Cor. 16:15; 2 Cor. 8:4; 9:1; 11:8; Heb. 6:10; 1 Pet. 4:10f).

7.    To minister mercy to others.
